The Butterfly Effect is a concept in chaos theory. It was discovered by Edward Lorenz in the 1960s.
As with so many scientific discoveries, this one was an accident. Lorenz rounded off some numbers while doing calculations and was shocked at the effect that had in the end. It was not the small variation he expected, but a completely different result.
He gave a speech to the American Association for the Advancement of Science titled, "Predictability: Does the Flap of a Butterfly's Wings in Brazil set off a Tornado in Texas?" The Butterfly Effect explains why predicting the weather is still so difficult.
It also illustrates how the seemingly inconsequential events and decisions of day to day life can have far-reaching effects.
